Message text:

After Effects error: Disposing non-empty cache.

Message interpretation:

An item in the disk or memory cache is not invalidated and still considered as representing a layer or frame. The connection is not broken and the composition view does not refresh correctly.

Possible causes:

This can happen if you use multiple levels of nesting or very complex effects stacks. In some cases, After Effects will not recognize changes made to a composition or a parameter of an effect. As a result, the wrong pixel buffer remains in place and is shown.

Resolution or workaround:

You can use the Purge functions in the Edit menu to manually delete all cached items. However, depending on the effects used and the structure of your project, the problems may come back after a while.

Message text:

After Effects error: Disk Cache folder doesn’t exist, so disk caching will be disabled. Please check your settings in Memory & Cache Preferences.

Message interpretation:

The folder you are using for After Effects‘ disk cache is no longer in place.

Possible causes:

Often you will simply have renamed a folder or a disk/ volume and after that, the program can no longer find the folder due to the paths stored in the preferences being invalid. If you are using external disks, RAID arrays or network drives, you may also have disconnected them or not powered them on. as a last item the file structure or the disk itself may be damaged. In my particular case the separate internal disk I used for the cache was defective.

Resolution or workaround:

Simply adjust your preference as the message states.
